LOLTREK

I’m not even going to try to describe this. Just click the damned link. (h/t FilkerTom again)

Edited: Oh, damn, why did I have to keep clicking?

New animated Trek series?

Hmm. If this were Babylon 5, it would make a certain amount of sense, but how far away from Roddenberry’s ideals can you get and still call it Star Trek? (Thanks to Laura for the link. Hope things out there get better fast….)

The Empty Chair

Some of you know that I named my elder daughter after a character of Diane Duane’s. Today, the last book in her series which featured that character was released as a PDF on the Simon and Schuster website. I’m about halfway through: I can hardly wait for the bus ride home so I can finish it. :-)

“Balance of Terror” remastered

Because of all the running around I was doing on Saturday (Go Cougs!), I missed around half of the premiere remastered episode of Star Trek, “Balance of Terror”. This has always been one of my favorite episodes, and featured prominently in my 20th Anniversary Celebration, when I packed the South Wayland lounge in Wriston Quad with a rented large-screen TV (large being 25 inches or so back then) and VCR for a three-movie marathon.

Coming in to the middle, I wasn’t sure for a while if I was watching the new version or the old version: they had rendered the Enterprise so well that it looked too much like the model for me to tell until I saw the first phaser shots. While they could easily have Lucas-ized the space battles, they didn’t: what I saw Saturday night was much the same as I’ve seen for the past 30-odd years, but cleaner. Kudos to Paramount for taking the high road.

Original Trek remastered

I heard a while ago that Star Trek was being redone with CGI effects. I just found out that the first episode will be “Balance of Terror”, and that it will apparently be airing in the Seattle area on Saturday the 16th, at 10:00, on channel 11.

There go any other plans for that evening… :-)

A new Sarek

As some of you know, I’ve been going by the nick “Sarek” online since 1986 or so. Mark Lenard’s portrayal of Spock’s father (among other roles) stood out, even against other talented actors on various Star Trek series.

A group of fans has been working on new original Trek episodes called “New Voyages”, and have secured the support of Walter Koenig and, most recently, George Takei. On their current news page, there is also a picture of the new Sarek.

This could work…

How can they bill this as “Ultimate”?

They forgot the animated series. :-)

High-tech gaming

Star Trek Star Trek was a very popular game on early microcomputers and minis, and lots of versions existed at one time. The “standard” was originally written in HP BASIC by Mike Mayfield in 1972 and included in the HP library in 1973.

I don’t know how many different systems I played this one. I think I’ll try to port it to VFP over my vacation. :-)
