Two days ago, Anita Rowland died. She’d been battling cancer for quite some time, but her family thought she had 6 months to go, until last week, when it went down to a month — and then a few days over the weekend. She passed away on Monday, as her husband held her hand. He has a memorial thread over on his LJ.
She was one of the first Seattle bloggers I started following, and the organizer of the monthly blogger Meetups in Seattle and on the Eastside. I swiped many a link from her for this blog. :-) I first became aware of her, I think, when I heard an interview on KUOW about blogging. (Mine existed at the time, but I wasn’t doing much with it.) If I remember correctly, I listened to it while delivering pizzas in Woodinville.
She and Jack cared for her grandson, R—-. Ael and Erin met him once at a Meetup at Crossroads, and instantly hit it off.

Ael stayed home from school today, thanks to some lingering queasiness from last night (too much lactose, I think). I decided that muffins would be good for breakfast, so after I dropped Erin off at school, I walked over to Paradis.
I was pleasantly surprised to spot Krusteaz muffins on the shelf. It’s hardly rare to see Seattle companies (besides Starbucks, of course) on the shelves around here, but they’re nice to find anyway. :-) It was over $2: the Betty Crocker muffins were .89. Easy choice, right?
Wrong.
After looking again at the price tags, I noticed that the unit price for the Krustez muffins was actually lower than the Betty Crocker ones. Checking back of the boxes, I found that the Krusteaz mix made 12 muffins, while the Betty Crocker mix made…
Five.
Anybody here have a muffin tin with 5 cups? Raise your hands, please. Go ahead, I’ll wait….
Eep. The girls didn’t like riding the ferries anymore after a late-night safety drill proved a bit too unnerving.
No way are they getting anywhere near this plotline anytime soon….

Smithsonian Magazine has opened up their annual Museum Day program to the public, instead of just subscribers. Go to a participating museum on Saturday, Sept. 30, and get two free admissions.
Hmm, I’ve never been to MOHAI before… Thanks to Raymond Chen for the timely notice.

Umm… then what’s the point of having them? :-)
(5) Mascots: Team mascots must stay behind the six-foot white border at all times during the game (they may be on the field at appropriate times during the pregame and at halftime when players are not on the field), and they are prohibited from engaging in any acts of taunting opposing players, coaches, and game officials. In the event of violations, teams employing the mascots will be subject to significant fines.
(Lots of good linkage from Laura today….)

Downtown seattle on a friday night. The drummer across the street from the busstop pounds on his tubs. The crowd mills by the Cheesecake Factory.

I mentioned over on Scoble’s post that I had just missed him at the Seattle Central Library tonight: I had ducked in because I wanted to leave some feedback to Metro about a bad experience with my driver.
The driver came up to the stop in the middle lane and abruptly turned into the stop, ignoring the bike on the side of the road, which was then placed between the back half of the bus and the
roadcurb, apparently with less than a foot of clearance, as I could see when I got off the bus. As I got off, I commented that he hadn’t left the bike much room.Driver: “What bike?”
Me: “The bike back there that you cut off.”
Driver: “Things happen.”
Me: “THINGS HAPPEN???”
Driver: “Well, what should I have done?”
Me: “Well, maybe let the bike pass you instead of cutting it off.”
Driver: “If you say so.”
Me: “Yes, I say so!”
Rather irked at his behavior (there may have been a couple more lines in here), I said,
“Well, I’ll call your supervisor, and see what they think about it!”
The driver responded,
“Go ahead, they don’t care!”
The phrase “Get a life” was also used at some point. I’d like to point out that at this point, I was outside the bus, and he was driving alongside me with the door open so that he could continue yelling. There was another passenger waiting at the stop who agreed with me about the driver’s behavior, in more colorful terms than I had used.
