Two Girl Scouts, researching endangered orangutans, discovered that they were becoming more endangered because of habitat destruction caused by conversion of the land to produce palm oil, one of the ingredients in the popular cookies. This year, they sold magazines.

I wonder why this surprises me.
Bush-administration officials privately threatened organizers of the U.N. Climate Change Conference, telling them that any chance there might’ve been for the United States to sign on to the Kyoto global-warming protocol would be scuttled if they allowed Bill Clinton to speak at the gathering today in Montreal….
I wonder if the organizers said something to the effect of “Look, we know you’re going to come up with some excuse to back out anyway, so sit down and shut up.”
