About

Garrett’s been a faithful Blogger user since the Pyra days, but decided he needed a bit more control over his setup, and a bit less republishing of the complete set of HTML documents with each template tweak. :-)

A Rhode Island native, he recently moved back to Central Maine after living in Bothell, WA for the past 7 years. He’s spent time at Microsoft both as a contractor and FTE, and has been working with FoxPro/VFP since 1994. He started playing clarinet in 1976, shortly before the Rhode Island Bicentennial in May. He’s a voracious SF/Fantasy reader, and assisted Diane Duane with a very early version of her website. He’s also an Atwater-Donnelly fan, and put them on the web while it was still unusual enough for them to get a listing in a printed Web directory. (Now if only I had actually bought a copy…)

While still living in Bothell, his daughters were in a dual-language program at their public elementary school, spending half their class time in English and half in Spanish, with half their classmates being native Spanish speakers.

  1. Ehh. If you had been a long-time commenter, or a long-term linker, I’d be more inclined to leave that last comment up. But, since I’ve never heard of you before, I have to class it as linkspam. I’m leaving it moderated for a bit before I tell Akismet to treat it as spam, though. If I see that same post on lots of other blogs, it’s toast.

  3. You’re welcome. :-) I’m not quite sure why this comment is here, instead of on the relevant post, but since WordPress doesn’t seem to have an automatic way to move it, I’ll answer here. My wife used to go to UMaine, and she still gets the Maine Campus email edition. That’s where she got the info. (She’s currently a Distance Degree Program student at Washington State, after a couple of kids and couple of moves disrupted her study schedule. :-) She goes up to the Marketplace to study sometimes, though: the Bear’s Dean has certainly changed since our time!)

  4. Hello Garrett,

We heard you were back in Maine. How are you? Are you still doing FoxPro work? We’d like to hear from you.

  5. Dear Mr. Fitzgerald,

I just read a question you asked in the “Making Light” blog on on December 14, 2007 (http://nielsenhayden.com/makinglight/archives/009718.html) where you state, “Anybody else remember how ‘Kai Beezey Tentroi’ got his name?” I grew up in the 50′s and 60′s and remember reading stories with this alien in Boys’ Life magazine. Unfortunately I can’t find anything else about the stories or the author. I’m almost 60 now and am trying to share some of this history with my son. Can you tell me something about these stories?

Thanks, in advance, for your help,

  6. Unfortunately, I don’t have the books, so my memories are around 30 years old. I know Donald Keith was a penname for two brothers — see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Keith for the little I was able to find out on the web. If I remember correctly, KBZ was a location designation on the 10th story of a large residential complex called Troy — hence the name.

  7. Hi Garrett,
Thanks for the comment you left on my blog about Dragons Fly on the Winds of Time. I had to smile when I saw your music interest on your profile page – I’m a fan of Mahler and Thompson, as well. And a sci-fi fan! Thanks again for the friendly visit!
