New permalink structure

One of the things I was looking forward to when moving webhosts was Apache’s mod_rewrite module, which just allowed me to flip from using URLs with the post number in them to ones with the date and post title in them. Much more convenient. :-)

So far, everything’s been pretty smooth. I’m currently working on switching my main site from FrontPage to Drupal. I found a nice theme for it: I just have to finish moving the content over, and cleaning up non-working code. :-)

  1. But won’t the change in permalinks break older links to your site? I’ve been wanting to do that, but I’ve got 2k+ posts, with some valuable external links to them…

  2. If I were changing between different pretty permalinks, I think it would break them, but changing between default and pretty doesn’t — I just tested it with an old link a few posts ago.

  3. I also just installed the Redirection plugin, so references to my old Blogger posts work again. It also let me redirect links between the old pretty urls that I used for a week and the new way, which made it easier to do redirects from the old HTML pages.
