Wikipedia addiction

Hmm, I seem to have broken into the list of top 2000 editors at the Wikipedia (strictly by count). The question is, is this a good or bad thing? :-)

  1. Heh. My friend Terence (khaosworks) is a #72, if that makes you feel any better.

  4. Are you asking what my objective is, or whether I’m editing objectively? :-)

  5. It’s bad. I’m about to leave my boyfriend who is useless with editing that thing. He’s now unemployed, on the dole and he edits all night, sleeps all day. I’ve pretty much had it! Wiki-ing is not a life. I understand that it’s interesting and compelling and hell, I use the thing too but to let it become your life is just sadder than sad.

  6. I have recently started to compile a list of the different “addictions” I have been reading about on some of the blogs. So far I have encountered the following dependencies: drugs, alcohol, porn, oil (as in petroleum), gambling, food, exercise, love, video games, comment addiction (i.e., checking the comments on one’s blog), TV addiction, yarn addiction (not a misprint!), Internet addiction, blog addiction, Technorati addiction, information addiction, addiction to War of Warcraft, Bloglines, taco addiction, stichin addiction (i.e., stitching), sex addiction, publicity addiction, email addiction, sugar addiction, , addiction to online gaming, addiction to MySpace, window shopping, addiction to technology, knitting addiction (no joke!), thrill seeking,, coffee, and now addiction to Wikipedia.

While addiction to Wikipedia isn’t viewed as one of the more “typical addictions” such as alcohol addiction or drug dependency, I do wonder what kind of withdrawal symptoms a person experiences when he or she stops visiting Wikipedia “cold turkey.”

From a different perspective, I understand that there are some “horror stories” about people who have become addicted to the Internet. For instance, I have read about people who have become zombies because they are on MySpace or play online games for more than 15 hours per day! Is this actually happening with respect to Wikipedia?

  7. I’m not firmly convinced that this last post isn’t spam, but if it is, at least it’s got enough content to keep around until proven otherwise…
