Ferry update

The other day, I mentioned that I had expressed my concerns about Washington State Ferry lifeboats to WSF management. Since I had specifically mentioned the possibility of terrorist attack in my message, I was disturbed to read the following lines in the response from Susan Harris-Huether, Customer Information Manager.

Hence our vessels are designed so that another ferry can go bow to bow and you can walk onto another vessel. Our vessels also have multiple compartments so if we had a crash, the vessel would still float.

Does it seem to anyone else like they’re missing the point?

Metaquoting metaquotes?

There’s a community on LiveJournal called metaquotes, which consists of noteworthy quotes picked up from various livejournals.

I posted a comment that Camwyn (she of the Silmarillion-in-1000-words) had made on her journal, and got the following exchange in the comments to that post. Since metaquoting metaquotes seems a bit too self-referential, I figured I’d post it here.

And add to it the longstanding rivalry between the Red Sox and the Yankees. I mean, these teams *hate* each other. The fans *hate* each other. It’s kind of insane. If the Sox had beaten anyone else to advance to the Series, it would have been wonderful for Sox fans, but beating the Yankees - in Yankee Stadium - after losing 3 games straight in a best-of-seven playoff - is like all of the best things ever in one giant best-thing-ever pie.

AmandaTheGreat:

I believe the appropriate term for such an event is “PWNED.”

Promoting torturers?

The American Prospect is running an article on how those responsible for Abu Ghraib are actually moving up in the ranks, rather than down.

Major General Barbara Fast — the highest-ranking intelligence officer tied to the Abu Ghraib prison scandal — is on deck to be put in charge of the U.S. Armys main interrogation training facility at Fort Huachuca, Arizona.

Elsewhere on the site is an article about extraordinary rendition, and other articles that may be of interest.
