Why IBM won’t settle or buy out SCO

Over on GrokLaw, A. Nony Mouse left an insightful comment on why IBM has been handling the SCO case as it has.

To sum up: IBM values its Intellectual Property portfolio above all else, and therefore values everyone else’s almost as highly. To be accused of plundering someone else’s IP is therefore an attack on the very foundations of the company, and will be defended against with every resource at their disposal.

It’s a good thing for Utah that IBM doesn’t have tac nukes at their disposal…

2-year-old actor sues over booboo

Ok, this is ridiculous. Lost wages? Why didn’t the mom just put him in a plastic bubble if she was that worried?

From the “I’m going straight to hell” file…

On our way back from Safeway, the girls (6 and 4) decided they were playing a video game as they walked between Donna and me. They were moving back and forth on the sidewalk, picking up power-ups and collecting pieces for their cog disguise. As they walked by their favorite shortcut, Donna said “If you go the way we usually go, you’ll see Baby Jesus!

Ael said, “Yeah, and if we see Jesus, we get extra, extra, extra points!”

NPR audio

Slashdot today pointed at an NPR piece on “the Wilhelm” — a particular scream that shows up in movie after movie.

Also, for a while, I’ve been wanting to point at This American Life’s piece on the ultimate community theater fiasco. Make sure you’re somewhere where you won’t disturb people with the various choked-off noises you’ll be making.

And, again from TAL, Sarah Vowell’s Tocatta and Fugue in Me, a piece with deep meaning to anyone who ever did music in school.

FERRARI

Scoble just pointed us to an interesting entry by Rory Blyth about coding standards. There is a brilliant comment near the end that gave me the title for this post.

Really Cute Kittens

These kittens have been advertising Bangor Savings Bank at Christmas for years and years now. They are now large and fat, but they’ll live forever as the cutest kittens ever advertised. :-)

(I wrote a few years ago and requested that they put them up on the web site. I don’t know if it was my letter that got them added, but… :-) )
